Company Forges Collaboration for Economical Production of Hydrogen Fuel
4th April 2017 – Liverpool, UK – ULEMCo, the company leading the use of ultra-low emission hydrogen-fuelled commercial vehicles in the UK – has announced a collaboration with Spanish company H2B2 to accelerate the commercialisation of hydrogen fuelled vehicles, both in Spain and the UK.
The companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding that sees the firms enter a non-exclusive partnership to maximise the opportunity for the use and supply of hydrogen economically through scaled production.
There is a natural synergy between the partners: while ULEMCo develops and commercialises the technology for converting commercial fleets to run on dual fuel (hydrogen / diesel), and is working with several fleet operators to demonstrate the practicality of hydrogen as a low carbon fuel, H2B2 is focussed on the economic green production of hydrogen and the integration of large scale (1MW plus) hydrogen electrolysers on industrial applications, mobility and energy storage solutions..
ULEMCo’s technology, deployed in HGV and heavy duty engines, such as buses, provides H2B2 and end customers with a market for high volumes of hydrogen. Producing hydrogen at a large scale makes it an economically attractive alternative fuel for fleet operators.
The Spanish authorities, in common with others around the world, have an interest in hydrogen: Madrid and Barcelona have announced plans to address air quality problems by banning diesel and older vehicles respectively from their cities, and heavy duty vehicles remain a problem the world over.
“We are seeing a renewed wave of optimism and investment in the Spanish market”, said Amanda Lyne, CEO of ULEMCo. “Now and post-Brexit, we want to be able to address the Spanish market with an affordable alternative to diesel fuel as demand for greener alternatives grows.”
“ULEMCo is making great progress in deploying hydrogen dual-fuel vehicles in the UK. We see enormous opportunity of ULEMCo’s tecnology in this market, as well as to achieve even greater penetration in the Spanish speaking markets”, added Javier Brey, CEO of H2B2.

ULEMCo Ltd is based in Liverpool, UK and was founded in 2014 as a spin out of Revolve Technologies, to commercialise intellectual property and capability in hydrogen combustion engine technology. The company retrofits vehicles, starting with diesel Ford Transit vans to enable them to run on commercially available hydrogen. The technology allows vehicle fleet managers to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions to ultra-low levels.
Commercial fleets across the UK benefit from a reduced carbon foot print while still having the full range capability of standard diesel vehicles. Alongside various partners, ULEMCo already supports a fleet of 20 vehicles across a range of hydrogen hubs in the UK. The company is targeting commercial fleet retrofits to grow the market significantly over the next 18 months, and then expand into other vehicle types over the longer term. Its growth plans include creating a hydrogen re-fuelling network, to capitalise on the existing local infrastructure for this ‘green’ fuel.
H2B2 Electrolysis Technologies SL is a technology company providing innovation, design, engineering, manufacturing, integration, financing and operations and maintenance for modular hydrogen production systems, using water electrolysis. The company was formed in 2016 based on two decades of experience in hydrogen production, processing and technology development. H2B2 has offices in the United States and Spain, and promotes and develops centralized and distributed hydrogen production facilities, and produces and sells hydrogen to clients. In addition to products, H2B2 has the flexibility to produce solutions for bespoke applications. The company is focused on high demand markets, providing a sustainable solution for energy storage, transportation fuel and industrial applications.
