12th May 2020 – Liverpool, UK – ULEMCo, the company pioneering the adoption of ultra-low emission hydrogen fuel in the UK, has named Dr Bob Joyce as its new Chairman. Dr Joyce takes up the role this month, following an extensive career in the automotive industry. For the last 15 years of his career he worked on the Board of Jaguar Land Rover, responsible for product and engineering. Since his retirement in 2016, he has worked as an Advisor and NED / Chair to a range of companies, and was a board member of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
“I am delighted at Bob’s appointment, given his background in the automotive sector, and in helping similar businesses to achieve market success”, said Amanda Lyne, Managing Director of ULEMCo. “His appointment comes at an important stage of our company development, as we move from early stage to scale-up, and we are excited about the role that Bob will make in ensuring we achieve our objectives. His network of contacts and wealth of relevant experience will be most valuable to us.”
“I am very happy to join Amanda and the board at ULEMCo, working in this vital area of the low carbon economy”, said Bob Joyce. “Hydrogen fuel has a key role to play in the commercial vehicle sector. Dual-fuelled and hydrogen-fuelled ICE commercial vehicles provide a highly cost effective and market acceptable solution similar to that of EV hybrids in the passenger car sector. Extensive roll out of this technology across the appropriate commercial sectors will provide an important contribution to a reduced carbon economy – leading to true zero carbon compliance in the next decade in the UK. I look forward to being part of the ULEMCo team at the forefront of this transformation.”
Dr Joyce will succeed ULEMCo’s first Chairman, Chris Lee, who is stepping down after a long career to spend more time with his grandchildren and family. “Chris combined rare experience in both the automotive and clean tech sectors”, said Ms Lyne. “He really understood ULEMCo’s business proposition to achieve decarbonisation of vehicles, and helped us to focus on the applications with the most immediate impact, such as urban trucks and hydrogen energy clusters. He has been a great mentor for the business and for me personally.”
Bob Joyce holds an engineering degree and an honorary doctorate from the University of Leicester, and an MBA from Warwick University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and was recognised by Debrett’s as one of the UK’s Top 500 most influential people in 2015, and in the Top 15 for industrial and technology development.

At the company:
ULEMCo Ltd is the world’s first hydrogen commercial vehicle conversion company, enabling fleet, commercial and niche vehicle owners to have access to zero emission hydrogen fuel, as part of their strategies to reduce transport related carbon emissions.
ULEMCo is based in Liverpool, UK and was founded in 2014 as a spin out of Revolve Technologies, to commercialise intellectual property and capability in hydrogen combustion engine technology. The company converts vehicles, having started with diesel Ford Transit vans, to enable them to run on commercially available hydrogen. The technology allows vehicle fleet managers to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions to ultra-low levels.
Commercial fleets across the UK benefit from a reduced carbon foot print while still having the full range capability of standard diesel vehicles. Alongside various partners, ULEMCo already supports a fleet of vehicles across a range of hydrogen hubs in the UK. The company is targeting commercial fleet conversions to grow the market significantly over the next 18 months, and then expand into other vehicle types over the longer term. Its growth plans include creating a hydrogen re-fuelling network to capitalise on the existing local infrastructure for this ‘green’ fuel.
